What moved win: more play, a different hold, or both.
A month-end that reports win up or down without separating play from hold leaves the property guessing.
Win came in above last year. That sentence gets read out in a management meeting and there is nothing in it anyone can act on. Two very different months produce it. Coin-in can be flat while hold runs above its normal band, or hold can sit exactly where it always sits while more play came through the door.
Those two months call for different work. More play is a reinvestment and marketing result, and the question is where it came from and whether it repeats. A hold swing is variance or a change in mix, and part of that win is going back. A month-end that does not separate them sets the next plan on the wrong assumption.
Comparable months come first
The split only means something if the two months can be set against each other. A month with an extra Saturday looks strong whether or not anything on the floor improved. Matching weekdays, Saturday against Saturday, takes the calendar back out of the number. A chosen month against last year or against last month, read as the full month and again on matched days, gives the same period two honest looks.
The number has to stop moving
The other half of a defensible month is that it stays put. Ratings get adjusted and late entries post, and the figure discussed on Tuesday is not the figure on the screen on Friday. A month that has been signed off should be frozen and held as a permanent record, so the next conversation starts from what was agreed rather than from a fresh pull.
Definitions deserve the same treatment. A scorecard of 41 metrics grouped by source, each carrying its own definition and formula, puts the standing argument over whose theo is the real theo on paper where it can be settled. Two departments can argue about the plan without also arguing about which numbers are right.
Promotions get the same test
A promotion judged on coin-in alone nearly always looks like it worked. Scored against the same days a year earlier on win, hold, free play and theo together, some will hold up and some will turn out to have paid for play that was coming anyway. That is what tells a property which ones to put back on the calendar.
Plenty of properties arrive at this split eventually, by hand, some days after the meeting where the decision was already made. The file the property already produces has everything in it. What a month-end should hand back is the breakdown of what moved win, on days that match, in a form that does not change after it is signed.
